Messaging evidence ladder
Keep analytics interactions separate from messaging and sales outcomes.
Inventory every WhatsApp route
Identify wa.me links, api.whatsapp.com links, mobile deep links, floating widgets and script-generated controls. Record which pages and interface placements use each route.
Name the event accurately
A privacy-safe event such as whatsapp_click should describe contact intent. Useful context may include page type or CTA placement, but never prefilled message text, phone numbers or customer-entered content.
Build a resilient trigger
Test direct anchors, nested icons, redirected links, new-window behavior and dynamically inserted widgets. Prefer a trigger based on the actual link destination or a controlled data-layer event rather than fragile visual text.
Test consent and device behavior
Verify behavior on mobile and desktop, with and without the WhatsApp app, across consent states and when popup or tracking protection applies. Confirm that measurement does not block the contact action.
Reconcile real conversations
Use the messaging inbox or CRM to record received and qualified conversations. Analytics click totals and actual conversations will differ because people can cancel, switch devices, message directly or block tracking.
